Upon leasing the property from the city comptroller, Egon Spengler and his colleagues outfitted the interior with proton packs, containment units, and monitoring equipment. The transformation turned a public safety building into a private fortress against supernatural threats, complete with sleeping quarters for the investigators. The Firehouse is perhaps most famous for serving as the team's base of operations during the Gozer incident. While the climactic battle against Gozer occurred at 55 Central Park West (the Shandor building), the Firehouse remained the hub from which the Ghostbusters launched their investigations and prepared their equipment. Following the initial victory, legal troubles forced a temporary closure of the business. However, the building remained central to the group's identity. When paranormal activity resurfaced in the city, the team returned to the Firehouse to reactivate their equipment, proving that despite setbacks, this location remains the enduring heart of ghostbusting operations.
